Dick and Clara Thompson will be opening their doors to help raise funds for the historic Cartlidge Barn project — the barn doors, that is.
There are a limited number of tickets now on sale for the Farm to Table fundraiser at 6 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Thompsons’ Red Barn at 5563 W. C.R. 650 N., North Salem.
Farm to Table events continue to grow in popularity and usually consist of a chef taking locally grown vegetables and freshly butchered meats and serving them up in a unique way. Pair these meals with locally crafted beers or wine, and you have a feast fit for a fund-raiser to restore a historic barn.
Faith Toole is serving as the Cartlidge Barn Project Fund chairperson. She said she hopes this becomes an annual event to help support the barn project.
“I’m very excited and I have met a lot of great people while working on this,” Toole said.
Toole is a member of the Hendricks County Antique Tractor and Machinery Association. She said they had been looking to erect a barn at the county fairgrounds in Danville to store their antique equipment.
Cathy Cartlidge-Mekel read a newspaper story about that and decided that her family might be able to help. Toole said she and some others from the HCATMA went to look at the Cartlidge Barn in Avon that dated back to pre-Civil War days.
The group was thrilled with the barn, and the family made the donation.
The idea for the Farm to Table event came from a meeting she had with the staff at the Hendricks County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
“The idea started out as a seed,” she said. “I was talking with Jaime (Bohler Smith) and she dropped the seed.”
Toole then sat down with Chef Nick Carter of the Black Swan Brewpub and Dick Thompson.
“They had so many good ideas including having Chateau Thomas come on board,” she said. “It has just grown since then.”
The four-course dinner will be created using locally grown and raised foods. Many county organizations have jumped at the chance to highlight locally produced foods.
“Beasley’s Orchard is going to make caramel apples as our thank you gift,” Toole said.
The Hendricks County Pork Producers and the Hendricks County Beef Producers are also involved in the Farm to Table fundraiser.
In addition to the dinner, Jeremy Morris and The Harvest Road Band will provide a benefit performance to entertain guests.
“I’m hoping that we continue on this upswing so we can get the barn moved to the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds.”
The barn was taken down by Dean Smith with Timeless Timber Frame Company, based out of Frankfort. Smith is storing the barn until the money is raised to rebuild it on the fairgrounds property.
Toole said the Cartlidge Barn Fund was established because the barn raising project is too big for the club to do on its own. The goal is to raise $200,000, but when they reach $85,000, they will rebuild and place the barn at the fairgrounds.
The fund is established through the Hendricks County Community Foundation, where they fall under the 501(c)(3), making any donations tax deductible.
