DV Awareness Month kicks off with walk/run

PLAINFIELD — Sheltering Wings will host its eighth annual “Break a Sweat, Break the Cycle” 5K Walk/10K Run event Sept. 29 at Hummel Park in Plainfield.

The event is the kick-off for the month of October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The focus of the morning is to educate the community about the realities of domestic abuse and the options available to women and children.

The day will begin with registration at 8 a.m., the program at 9 a.m., and the walk and run itself at 9:30 a.m.

Information about the shelter and domestic violence will be available, as well as materials about Sheltering Wings’ Teen Dating Violence program and Coaching Boys Into Men program.

The honor guard, made up of area police officers, will be present. Run ID is participating in the event, providing number bibs and gift bags. The run portion of the event will be timed.

The registration fee is $20 and includes a commemorative T-shirt. To register or for more information, call 386-5062 or visit the website at www.shelteringwings.org/events/walk-run.

Other Sheltering Wings events happening throughout the month of October include a judicial open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 10 at the shelter, a candlelight vigil from 7 to 8 p.m. Oct. 25 at a location to be announced, and a Battle of the Bands event from 5 to 10 p.m. Oct. 27 in Avon.

  • Indianapolis champions lung cancer cause

    Local residents are fueling the national movement to double lung cancer survival at the inaugural Free to Breathe Indianapolis Run/Walk June 22 at Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis.

    The event will feature a 5k run/walk and 1-mile walk, followed by a rally, tot trot, silent auction, and family activities. Proceeds from the event support the National Lung Cancer Partnership’s programs dedicated to doubling lung cancer survival by 2022.
