I-465 Westside traffic shift begins Friday

Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors are planning a two-phase traffic shift on northbound Interstate 465 on the Indianapolis’ west side.

The shift will allow contractors to replace temporary pavement with permanent concrete, making way for the added traffic lanes in the final configuration of the Accelerate 465 project at the I-74/U.S. 136/Crawfordsville Road interchange.

Implementation of the first phase will begin Friday. Two lanes of northbound traffic will remain open on the right-hand side of I-465 between 21st and 34th streets. A third express lane, which will not have access to exit ramps, will be directed to the median. Trucks will be restricted from the express lane, and a 45 mph speed limit will be enforced. Overhead signs will help direct motorists to the proper lanes.

Temporary northbound lane restrictions will be needed Friday night to move barrier walls and modify pavement markings. Two short-term traffic stoppages, lasting up to 20 minutes each, will also be required to erect overhead panel signs.

The second phase, expected in late September, will shift three lanes of northbound I-465 traffic toward the median onto new pavement and the widened bridge over Big Eagle Creek. One lane will remain on the right-hand side for exiting to westbound I-74, U.S. 136, and Crawfordsville Road. That phase is expected to last about six weeks.

Southbound I-465 between 34th and 21st streets is currently in the express lane phase and is expected to shift three lanes to the median in about two weeks.

When the pavement replacement is complete, I-465 will be put in its permanent configuration with four lanes for through traffic and additional auxiliary and ramp lanes for traffic entering and exiting the interstate.
