Tears of Gaza screenings start this week

Christians for Peace and Justice in the Middle East (CPJME) is bringing the film “Tears of Gaza” to central Indiana for four screenings.

Screenings are 7 p.m. today at the Student Center of IUPUI, 420 University Blvd.; 8 p.m. Feb. 21 in room 010 at the Schwitzer Center on the University of Indianapolis campus; 6 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Eman School, 11965 Allisonville Road, Fishers; and 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Landrum Bolling Center on the campus of Earlham College in Richmond. All screenings are free and open to the public.

CPJME is a group of committed peace activists/citizens based in Indianapolis whose goal is to work for a just peace between Palestinians and the state of Israel. Many of its members have traveled on numerous occasions to the region.

“Tears of Gaza” is less a conventional documentary than a record of the December 2008 to January ‘09 bombing of Gaza by the Israeli military. No journalists were allowed to enter Gaza during the bombings in 2009.

Photographed by several Palestinian cameramen, both during and after the offensive, the film shuttles between the actual bombings and the repercussions of the fighting.

For the final three evening screenings, Fidaa Abuassi will be present. Abuassi is a 23-year-old woman currently in the United States on a Fulbright scholarship. She is from Gaza and lived through the attacks shown in the film. Her entire life has been lived under occupation, including the past six years under siege.
