Parents, community invited to body safety presentation

PLAINFIELD — Sgt. Terry Hall, a 42-year veteran of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, will make presentations about body safety to all of the elementary school students within the Plainfield Community School Corporation.

Parents and the community are invited to a special presentation 6:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at Brentwood Elementary School, 1630 Oliver Ave., in the cafeteria.

Karen Nay is the home school advisor at Brentwood Elementary. She said the program has been offered within the Plainfield district over several years.

“We try to have the program every three years,” she said. “But the last time we had it was in 2008.”

“He has interviewed child molesters who are in prison to get inside their heads,” Nay said. “He passes this information on to parents and the community.”

Children are not allowed to attend this program. Childcare will be provided in the school’s library.

Hall will discuss the myths of child molestation.

* Most offenders of sexual abuse are strangers.

* Sexual abuse of children most often occurs in poor neighborhoods and among uneducated people.

* Girls are the victims.

* Offenders are always men.

* Children imagine sexual experiences and make up stories about them.

Hall then has several age-appropriate conversations with all the Plainfield elementary school children over the next few days.

“Terry literally tells the kids how to keep their bodies safe,” Nay said. “He tries to make children understand why adults may touch them for good reasons such as a doctor.”

She said he also makes sure they understand the difference in a bad touch situation and that they do not have to allow just any adult to touch them.

“It is a well-rounded program,” Nay said. “He really gets down and talks to them on their level.”
