DANVILLE — Last Friday, students at Danville South Elementary School got a special presentation from the American Eagle Foundation and Duke Energy.
Senior Scientist John Pike said Duke Energy has partnered with the American Eagle Foundation, based in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., to bring the program to schools each year.
“(We) typically do four schools a year across our territory,” Pike said. “This year we did two in Clay County ... Mill Creek West this morning, and South Elementary today.
“The reason we do it, is to try to educate the kids on the importance of the resources, especially showing them the birds. Some of the birds they can see around here in Indiana, so they get to see them up close ... (The children learn) why it’s important to protect (the birds), what the foundation does trying to rehab the birds, and get them back into the wild.”
Rebecca Krebs and Karen Wilbur from the American Eagle Foundation put on the show, with the help 11 feathered friends, including eagles, falcons, and owls.
Krebs and Wilbur introduced each of the birds to the children and some shared their special talents, like flying over the heads of the students and finding hidden treats.
Wilbur explained during the presentation that the birds used in the program are “non-releasable” after being raised by humans. She added that the foundation attempts to rehabilitate any bird it receives to get it back into the wild.
