Meijer takes steps to open store in Plainfield

PLAINFIELD —

The plan commission here approved a development plan and site review for a new Meijer store during its meeting earlier this week.

PAEP Architecture Engineering approached the plan commission to request approval for the development plan for architecture and site design review for the approximately 191,352 square foot Meijer store. The project will also include a 2,640 square foot convenience store/gas station.

The convenience store required a waiver for building materials and the supermarket a waiver to allow loading docks to face a residential district.

The proposed site for the store is at 400 Dan Jones Road.

Robert L. Doran is the properties and real estate manager for Meijer, which is based in Grand Rapids, Mich.

“At the plan commission on Monday night we were asking for approval for our development plan,” Doran said. “The property already had the appropriate zoning, which is SC. That stands for “shopping center. We approached the plan commission because we needed to go through the Plainfield entitlement process.”

The team is now waiting on a report from the Indiana Department of Transportation.

“We are waiting to learn from INDOT in terms on what will be required by them in terms of traffic patterns and traffic movements,” Doran said.

He said an equally important next step is approval from the Meijer Executive Management Team.

“They reserve the right to approve all new stores,” Doran said. “It’s kind of like our final step of approval. After we have that approval, we will do a press release and have more details available.

“We hope this is forthcoming, but we do not yet have that final approval from the Executive Management Team. So, at this time, we have to kind of temper our enthusiasm.”
