Finer Things can be found in Brownsburg

BROWNSBURG —

The Finer Things in Brownsburg is a unique shop where recycling and art meet.

“We recycle just about anything,” said owner/operator Melissa Blackshear. “Why throw things out when you can fix them and make them into something new?”

The Finer Things carries a variety of artwork, furnishings, and unique gifts.

“And we try to make it very affordable,” Blackshear said. “We want everyone to be able to find something in our showroom. All the work we have is created by Indiana artists. It is all original artwork. We also have a mix of resale items.”

There is a smattering of vintage items and antiques — many of which have been repurposed.

“We have this jewelry by Don Krueger that is old made new again,” she said. “His pieces are made from old jewelry. And they are just beautiful.”

Blackshear found when she was putting her showroom together that people were interested in the strangest things.

“I would just put a rusty old piece in to show off something in a display and people would want to buy it,” she said. “I guess people are very interested because of shows like ‘American Pickers.’”

Finer Things has been a dream of Blackshear’s since 2000. While in school she did the business plan as her project.

“I been working in floral designs for weddings and homes — interior designs,” she said. “I just decided to make the jump.”

The shop opened on the east side of Brownsburg just after Father’s Day. In addition to the showroom, Blackshear offers her space for area artists to teach classes.

“We have different artists who will come in to offer classes on things like mosaics or folk art,” she said. “We even have a glass blower coming.”

The Finer Things is at 1032 E. Main St. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The store is closed on Sundays.
