Cards for Cascade

Euchre night seeks to raise D.C. funds

CLAYTON — If you have a good hand and are able to convince your partner across the table of it, you could be helping to send 20 Cascade Middle School students to Washington, D.C., this summer.

The Hazelwood Volunteer Fire Department will be the venue for the CMS parent-hosted euchre night at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 26. All funds raised that are not paid out to the top finishers will go toward funds needed for the students to make their June trip.

Cost is $20 per ticket and includes dinner, drinks, and dessert served by CMS students. There is also a silent auction and a reverse raffle that has a cost of $10 per ticket.

Holly Gillespie, who is helping to put on the evening and is a parent of an eighth-grade girl that hopes to go, says such a trip is priceless for students.

“It’s our country’s history,” she said. “You can’t really put into words what it means to them. You can learn so much in the classroom, but to get to see it is totally different.”

The students would be spending three days in Washington, D.C., and making a stop in Gettysburg, Pa., on the return trip. The estimated cost for each student comes in at around $1,300 and the euchre night has been a pivotal part of allowing the trip to happen, Gillespie said.

“It’s a continuing tradition that the parents are hosting,” she said. “They said that it could cover maybe a fourth of the cost per student.”

Gillespie said auction prizes were donated from a host of local businesses including Deer Creek Golf Club and Hoosier Gymnastics. She hopes the community will turn out in droves to help the students.

“My daughter can’t wait to see the Lincoln Memorial and she really wants to go to the Smithsonian,” she said.

Students plan on touring not only those places, but the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the World War II Memorial among other focal points.

“You can buy tickets or come the night of,” Gillespie said of the euchre night fundraiser. “It’s all eighth-graders that are going to be freshmen. The euchre tournament (really helps) to offset the cost to the parents because it is not something the school pays for.”

Sign-ins will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the games will begin at 6 p.m. The CMS students are in Kale Blickenstaff’s eighth-grade history class.

The Hazelwood Volunteer Fire Department is at 10042 S. C.R. 0, Clayton.
