Kiwanis Club sponsors Masquerade Mayhem

Event to benefit Susie’s Place

AVON — The Kiwanis Club of Avon will be holding a gala fundraiser for Susie’s Place, Hendricks County Child Advocacy Center, called Masquerade Mayhem. The event is 6:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Washington Township Pavilion Center.

Jerry Renzy, president of the Kiwanis Club of Avon, said the club started the event last year to help support the new Hendricks Regional Health YMCA in Avon.

“The first Masquerade Mayhem was a resounding success, any way you look at it,” Renzy said. “Everyone had a great time. The auction, the music, the excellent buffet, the first class entertainment and, most of all, the camaraderie made the event successful.”

The club decided to support Susie’s Place with this year’s event.

“Our children are our future,” Renzy said. “There is no resource in the world that will affect the world as much as they will. The Kiwanis Club of Avon realizes this and is dedicated to the betterment of our community, starting with this most valuable resource.

“Susie’s Place is committed to protecting children and is doing a wonderful job supporting them and reducing the suffering that can scar the lives of abused children. I think that’s a perfect fit.”

The club was introduced to Susie’s Place through a presentation by Executive Director Emily Perry.

“A representative from Susie’s Place gave a presentation at one of our regular Wednesday noon meetings at Prestwick Country Club,” Renzy said. “We were so impressed with their work that a committee was formed to look into ways to support this fantastic organization. We decided that our major fundraiser, Masquerade Mayhem, was the best vehicle for that purpose.”

Renzy has a long history with the club.

“I’ve been a Kiwanis member for over 30 years,” he said. “I joined when I was 23. This is my third year in the Avon club. I initially joined Kiwanis on the urging of a business associate that encouraged me by touting the business networking advantage of a service club.

“I found it to be much more valuable than that. I’ve learned a lot from conversations with the diverse range of business and professional people that I’ve gotten to know in the clubs. It gives me great satisfaction knowing we’re having fun working for causes that enhance our community.”

And club members have been hard at work for the 2012 Masquerade Mayhem. The event will include a dinner, silent auction, live auction, and games.

The dinner will be catered by The Coachman restaurant in Plainfield. It will include sausage and shrimp gumbo, prime rib, charcoal broiled chicken breast, and char-roasted prime rib of Indiana pork.

“The live auction includes a Colts tailgating package, which includes tickets, the food, a keg of beer, and even a chef,” Renzy said. “In addition, we’ll have a “Family Fun Package,” a “Romantic Getaway Package,” and an autographed John Mellencamp guitar.”

Masquerade Mayhem is a “black tie optional” event. The co-chairs for the event are Kiwanis Club member Rick Myers and Susie’s Place board member Kaye York. They’ve been spearheading the project for several months.

Tickets, priced at $75 each, may be purchased online at www.susiesplace.org or from any Kiwanis Club of Avon member.
