While freezing temperatures and show are still hanging around, it’s still time to think about spring.
Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (KIB) has projects planned all over the city and the Westside will soon be in the spotlight.
There will be a tree planting in the West 38th Street medians from 9 a.m. to noon March 30. There will be 100 trees planted, stretching from I-465 west to create a green corridor along this gateway into Indianapolis.
“We’re looking for 100 volunteers for this project,” said Ashley Fujawa, public relations director for KIB. “We purchase the trees and work with local green houses.”
She said KIB offers programs like this to any group that would like to do a beautification project in their neighborhood.
“We actually have four certified arborists on our staff,” Fujawa said. “We greatly care about trees.”
The experts will be on-site to help volunteers properly plant the trees. The KIB brings the trees, as well as all of the equipment for the project.
“This is a service we provide that is funded through generous donors,” Fujawa said.
She said the organization also helps to support individuals or groups in the community who may have an idea for a program of their own.
“We can even find the volunteers for their projects,” she said.
The KIB website — www.kibi.org — is a wealth of information on how to get projects going or how to volunteer on an upcoming project.
The tree planting on West 38th Street is one of the first of its kind for the season. KIB’s Great Indy Cleanup is kicked off in April.
The Great Indy Cleanup is an anti-litter program designed to combat heavy litter and debris that has accumulated in public spaces such as streets, alleys, greens spaces, and waterways.
“We have projects planned for every Saturday through October,” Fujawa said. “We do all kinds of things like painting, clean up, or tree planting.”
Members of the community can also go to any YMCA, PNC bank, or library to pick up free trash bags or gloves.
“The mayor will helps us with our official kick-off on April 27,” Fujawa said.
The Great Indy Cleanup runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 27 near West Washington Street and Belmont Avenue. Mayor Greg Ballard will be there to assist the neighborhoods of Stringtown, Hawthorne, and Haughville.
Participants will receive T-shirts and lunch will be provided. The KIB is looking for 250 volunteers for that project.
