Lightning jars apartment building with heavy fire

INDIANAPOLIS — Preliminary findings show lightning may have been the cause in an Oct. 5 apartment fire. The incident ravaged seven units and displaced approximately 20 people at the Island Club Apartments on the city’s west side.

It took a reported 50 firefighters from Wayne Township, Pike Township, Brownsburg, Avon, and Indianapolis fire departments to contain the fire. In all, 14 units were damaged.

The Wayne Township Fire Department reported that the call came in while its firefighters were assisting the Speedway Fire Department with a separate blaze. The Island Club fire was brought under control in approximately 45 minutes.

When crews arrived on the scene, they found smoke billowing from a second story unit.

While crews evacuated residents, the fire rippled through the attic space forcing firefighters out of the building to fight the fire on the exterior. There was a fear that the building may collapse.

Crews used water streams from ladder trucks to contain the majority of the fire and reentered the apartments when safe and completed the extinguishing of it.

All occupants of the building managed to escape the fire. The American Red Cross assisted victims as well.

There were no injuries, either to civilians or firefighters during the event. As of press time, there are no damage estimates to report.
