INDIANAPOLIS — The Ben Davis football team got back on the right track Friday night, beating Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference foe Lawrence North, 75-0.
The No. 6-ranked Giants, coming off their first loss of the season, got a little bit of a tune up Friday night against the winless Wildcats. Ben Davis returned to the win column and will look to carry that momentum next week when they face No. 1-rated Carmel.
“Obviously we’ll have our hands full,” Ben Davis coach Mike Kirschner said of next week’s match up with the Greyhounds. “We’re in the position to at least share the conference championship and we’ll have to take care of business next week. We’re excited about the opportunity.”
Lawrence North entered the game averaging less than nine points per game and allowing a massive 57 points per game average. The Giants, while young, were able to showcase their offense and defensive presence all night long.
However, they only needed one quarter of play to get it done.
In a cold, rain-soaked affair, Lawrence North quarterback Marcus Avery had a knack of throwing it right to the Ben Davis defense. He exhibited that on the first play from scrimmage as DeShaun Johnson intercepted the ball and gave the offense great field position at the Wildcats’ 22.
Ben Davis quarterback Kyle Castner then found Dorian Tate for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Castner would finish the game 5 of 11 for 95 yards and three touchdowns.
Lawrence North’s second possession of the contest was a three-and-out that gave the Giants possession at the Wildcats’ 34-yard line. Lajuwon Gildon capped the drive off with a three-yard touchdown run.
Gildon received extra playing time tonight and made the most of it with two of Ben Davis’ top rushers out.
“[Malcolm] Fogle’s out, [Jamie] Akin’s out and we kind of did it by community tonight,” Kirschner said of the Giants’ rushing attack.
Lawrence North struggled again on the next series as Ben Wiley intercepted Avery and in the midst of running it back, lateralled it to O’Shea Heard for the touchdown.
The Wildcats’ next drive was another three-and-out and that allowed Castner, from the first play of the drive, to launch a 50-yard touchdown pass to Michael Beaty.
The Giants led 28-0 to close the first quarter.
The second quarter featured much of the same. The Ben Davis defense gave up their first first-down with 11:48 in the quarter and answered three plays later with a 21-yard sack to pin Lawrence North at their own five-yard line.
With good field position again, Castner would find Sean Boswell for a 21-yard touchdown pass to put the Giants up 35-0 with eight minutes left in the second quarter. They did not score again until 1:16 remaining to raise the score to 42-0.
To make up for the lost time, the Giants recovered a fumble on the kickoff. Juwan Sargent ran the ball in shortly after from four yards out to make it 48-0 entering halftime.
The second half featured a running clock and the Ben Davis second team units. It also started off with a kickoff return for a touchdown to make it 55-0.
With two more defensive touchdowns in the second half, Ben Davis would sail to the 75-0 victory.
