Peace award nominations now being accepted

Do you know someone who does extraordinary work for peace in your neighborhood, family, business, or community? Nominate them today to win the Power of Peace Award - an annual recognition of a local leader or group that exhibits peacemaking in action that has made a positive contribution to Central Indiana.

Past awardees include the Latino Youth Collective, Efroymson Family, Ron and Jane Haldeman, Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis, and Deputy Mayor Olgen Williams.

To nominate someone or a local group, visit the website at www.peacelearningcenter.org to complete the short nomination form by Jan. 14.

The Power of Peace Award will be presented at Peace Learning Center's 15th annual Martin Luther King Festival that runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 19 at 1000 W. 42nd St. The event is free and open to the public, and no registration is required.

This year's festival will feature keynote speaker Kizito D. Kalima, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide and co-founder of the Amahoro Project - a grassroots movement that is committed to advocate for Peace and Forgiveness through reconciliation.

In addition to Kizito's message and watching the Power of Peace Award ceremony, activities will include family yoga, Freedom Riders traveling exhibit and documentary screening, spoken word workshops, drumming circles, community art with local multi-media artist Carol Tharp-Perrin, Zumba, Brazilian music and dance performance group North Star Capoeira, a free lunch, a community fair, and the Focus 2020 Listening Tour Session.

"We invite our Central Indiana neighbors to join Peace Learning Center in celebrating Dr. King's vision of a community that supports each other no matter where you are from - a day of art, music, food, and fun, there will be something for everyone," said Tim Nation, Peace Learning Center co-founder and executive director.

The mission of the non-profit Peace Learning Center is to educate, inspire, and empower people to live peacefully. For more information, visit the website at www.peacelearningcenter.org.
