IEMS mourns loss of two

Seeks to have streets renamed

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Emergency Management Services lost two of its own over the weekend and is hoping to honor them by having streets renamed in their honor.

Shortly after 3:30 a.m. Saturday, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and the Indianapolis Fire Department were dispatched to the intersection of Senate and St. Clair streets after receiving reports that an IEMS ambulance had been involved in a serious crash with entrapment.

The ambulance had rolled onto its side from the force of the impact and slid into an unoccupied, parked vehicle. The IFD began the process of extricating the ambulance crew. The driver and the medic in the ambulance were extricated and transported to Wishard Hospital in critical condition.

Paramedic Cody Medley and EMT Timothy McCormick were riding in their ambulance when they were hit.

McCormick, 24, died shortly after the accident. Originally from New York state, he lived in Greenwood and trained as an EMT in New York. He joined the IEMS team in June 2010. He and had recently attended IUPUI and was an Eagle Scout.

Medley, 22, died early Sunday as a result of the injuries sustained in the accident. He joined the IEMS team in June 2010. He lived in Indianapolis and enjoyed volunteering and being outdoors. He did his EMS training through IEMS and the IEMS Academy. He was a member of the Sunman Fire Department in Sunman prior to joining IEMS.

Multiple resources are being made available to IEMS staff through the Department of Public Safety, Midtown Mental Health Center’s crisis support team, and the IEMS Employee Assistance Program.

In honor of thier fallen brothers, IEMS has drafted a proposal and petition to the City County Councilor requesting that the City of Indianapolis change the names of North Senate Avenue between 11th Street and West North Street to “Medley Street” and West St. Clair Street between North West Street and North Meridian Street to “McCormick Street.”

Indianapolis public safety personnel will be given the chance to sign the written petition first. The general public may sign the petition online at http://www.change.org/petitions/the-indianapolis-city-county-council-change-2-city-street-names-in-indianapolis-in-honor-of-fallen-ems-heroes.

The official petition and proposal will be submitted Feb. 22 and, if approved, will be heard before the March 25 Indianapolis-City County Council meeting.

Members of the public who favor the name changes are encouraged to contact their city-county councilor beginning this Friday.
