Bulldogs win dual meet against Giants

BROWNSBURG — Brownsburg swimming and diving coach Joshua Saylor decided to mix some things up in the Bulldogs’ meet against Ben Davis last night. The results came out in Brownsburg’s favor as the girls defeated Ben Davis 107-69 and the boys won, 124-62.

“We took an opportunity tonight as we have very few home meets to swim a lot of the kids around in some different events,” Saylor said. “I think it’s important to give everybody a chance to be part of the success. A lot of kids stepped up and helped us win a meet tonight that don’t always get to do so. I was especially pleased for the kids that spend a lot of meets watching the other kids swim. I was happy they got a chance to get in there and contribute in a significant way.”

Saylor pointed to many swimmers but a few stood out in his mind.

“Alyssa Smock works her butt off and has made improvements,” he said. “Emily Kraatz, Megan Wolf, Bridgette Zollner; all of those girls had some really nice swims. I wanted them to know that there hard work is appreciated. Hope McQueen was a nervous wreck going into the 500 for the first time as a freshman today. I was really proud of her.”

Saylor also singled out Albert Turk, Connor Lucas along with brothers Nathan and Aaron Brooks on the boys’ side

Individual coed winners for Brownsburg included Kyle Baney (200 free), Kristin Verpe (200 IM), Grace Fulwider (50 free), Grason Horvath (diving), Wolf (100 fly), Joe Ancel (100 fly), Joe Myhre (100 free), Avery Chadd (500 free), Brad Green (500 free), Donnie Spencer (100 back), and Kierra Watson (100 breast).

The Bulldogs also had some success winning relays with Kraatz, Katie Thomas, Shelby Smith and Piper Lovett  (200 medley); Smock, Madison Kehr, Clarice Cross and Meghan Schrad (200 free); Baney, Jimmy Breedlove, Diego La Torre and N. Brooks (200 free); and Turk, Grant Anspach, Adam Moll, and Chad Hale (400 free).

According to Ben Davis coach George Fastrich, the Giants also tinkered with their line up for a few different reasons and a couple of swimmers stood out for their progress.

“I think we did really well and we had a couple of guys and girls that swam of today,” Fastrich said. “We were trying to see where they were at and had them swim in a couple of events they had not swum in the past month or so.

“Azher Dalal is a newer swimmer and it’s his second year on the team. He had a 20 second drop in his 500 freestyle. Svenja Drexler, who is a foreign exchange student, she had an eight second drop in her 100 fly today.”

Individual event winners for the Giants included Katie McKain (200 free, 100 back), Jess Partin (200 IM, 100 breast), Cole Crouch (50 free), Maddie Cook (diving) and Maddie Holmes (100 free).

Ben Davis winners in the relays were Partin, Darrin Frazier, Cameron Peck and Caelan Priddy (200 medley) along with Holmes, Morgan Stovall, Judith Medina, and Nicole Zellers (400 free).
