Bruins fall to Tigers in dual meet

LIZTON — Both Sagamore Conference swimming and diving teams knew what to expect after seeing each other last Saturday.

The results were Lebanon beating Tri-West in both the boys’ and girls’ events. The Tigers won the boys’ 101-83 and the girls’, 128-55.

For the Bruins, the results were satisfactory considering its fifth and seventh places at conference compared to the first and third of Lebanon.

“Overall, we were pretty pleased,” Tri-West coach Jeff Sankey said. “We’ve got a lot of girls that are sick right now, we’ve got a lot of girls who are hurt right now.

“Numbers-wise, we are hoping to have everybody healthy by the time sectionals roll around. Lebanon is a huge team, size-wise for us to compete with in both boys and girls.”

Coming off a great performance at conference, Lebanon continued it’s high performance.

“We placed pretty well,” Lebanon coach Michael Dollens said. “We had a chance to change our events from conference because they don’t like to swim the same events all the time, it gets stale. So we changed up our lineup a little bit and some of the kids responded really well.”

With the two teams having just met at conference, the squads knew what they were going up against.

“There not a lot of secrets, you know who they have and we knew they had really good diving so we knew what was going to happen,” Dollens said. “Most of these dual meets you know who the winner is going to be.”

Bruins sophomore Madison Jones repeated her wins at conference by taking home individual victories in the 200 free and 100 fly.

“Those are sort of her two events right now,” Sankey said.

Tri-West senior Sydney McCalley won the 100 breaststroke and was one second off of her school record time.

Bruins freshman Evan Cooper continued his great diving season coming off a conference championship as he broke his school record for “the third or fourth time” Sankey said last night. He scored a 294.20 with the next closest competitor 130 points behind.

“As a freshman, that’s always a good thing,” Sankey said. “He’s fantastic. He dominated the conference this last Saturday as he won by about 100 points. Pretty impressive, he’s nice to have around.”

Tri-West had success in girls diving as well with senior Lorin Dickerson winning with a score of 225.70. Dickerson was unable to compete at conference because of an injury but dove well hurt.

“Lorin’s going through some injury issues,” Sankey said. “She was still kind of hurt tonight and was 20 points away from her school record tonight injured.”

The two divers provide a solid 1-2 diving punch for Tri-West.

“It’s really nice because basically you can count on a win going into a meet so it’s nice to have those points,” Sankey said.

The Bruin boys’ relay teams won two of three relays with the quartet of Thomas Tintera, Ryan Richard, Braden Jones and Robert Brandkamp winning the 200 free relay. Winning the 200 medley relay was Tintera, Brandkamp, Jacob Corbett and Garhett Cook.

In boys’ individual events, Cook won in the 50 and 100 free, Corbett won in the 500 and Brandkamp won the 100 breast.
