Quakers crush Warriors

INDIANAPOLIS —  The Plainfield girl’s basketball team accomplished something on Tuesday night with its 70-24 victory over Covenant Christian that they haven’t been able to do yet in the 2012-13 campaign – they won away from home.

“We needed a win,” Plainfield coach Curt Benge said. “It is the first road game that we have won, so we needed to get something on the road...I think that we did some nice things and made some shots to improve ourselves tonight.”

The Quakers (4-3) got off to a hot start, beginning the game on a 30-8 run midway through the second quarter, pacing them to their lopsided victory.

Benge was pleased with his team’s effort on the defensive end, but he still sees area for improvement.

“(The defensive pressure) was a lot better, in terms of we need to learn how to pressure without fouling,” he said. “We have been pressuring people, but we have been sending them to the free throw line a lot. I think that we did a better job of doing that tonight.”

For a young Covenant Christian (0-6) team, these games are a learning process.

“There’s always things to take away after we look at the film,” Covenant coach Matt Williams said. “I told them in the locker room that we got beat to every loose ball. It’s about all of the details. Because we are so young, we are missing some of the details. It’s about how hard that you have to work for 32 minutes to put something together.”

For the Warriors, much of the early season schedule each year provides them the opportunity to prepare for the remainder.

“We stack our schedule hard in the beginning,” Williams said. “We know coming into the game against Plainfield that it is a game where we are going to expose a lot of weaknesses. We stack a lot of the 4A teams at the beginning of our schedule, so that come the second half of our schedule and the sectional, we are ramping up with some confidence.”

Maddie O’Day led the way for Plainfield with 11 points, while Sophia Wilson scored 10 and Kyndall Spears chipped in 9. In addition, the Quakers had 11 players enter the scoring column, a team effort that satisfied Benge.

“I am extremely pleased (with the team effort),” he said. “Some of our younger players got some experience. Kendyl Wheeler played a great game in the second quarter. She is a freshman for us.”

Mallory Huff led the way for Covenant Christian with seven points and Kaitlyn Luikart added five.

Plainfield will look to build on the victory when they host Terre Haute South Saturday, while Covenant will look to rebound when they battle Cathedral on Thursday.
