Colts’ coach has leukemia

INDIANAPOLIS — Chuck Pagano, first-year coach of the Indianapolis Colts, has been diagnosed with leukemia and is expected to spend the next six to eight weeks undergoing treatment.

Team officials called a news conference Monday morning to confirm Pagano’s illness. The coach has been hospitalized since last Wednesday.

Pagano, 51, suffered fatigue and noticed unusual bruising on his body around the start of the training camp in August, said team owner Jim Irsay. The coach attributed the fatigue to his new job and the oppressive heat of camp. His wife, Tina, urged him to see a doctor when symptoms didn’t clear up after the start of the season.

Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians has been named interim coach and will serve as long as necessary. Irsay said he doesn’t expect Pagano to immediately return to his duties even after his release from the hospital.

Dr. Larry Cripe said Pagano is diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia, a treatable form of cancer of the bone marrow. The coach is currently in semi-isolation at an Indianapolis hospital.

Pagano, former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator, was hired by the Colts earlier this year to replace Jim Caldwell.

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Fever are poised and ready to repeat as WNBA champions this season as they try to become the first team in five years to do so. With the core group of starters and most of their roster returning from last season, Fever coach Lin Dunn has every reason to believe that this group can hang another banner as long as they use last season’s success as a motivator and not a distraction.
