BROWNSBURG — The Brownsburg girls’ golf team won its second consecutive sectional Saturday afternoon on its home course at West Chase Golf Club. The Bulldogs narrowly edged county rival Avon by one stroke, 370-371.
Avon bested all county teams at the Hendricks County Tournament to begin the season, making this victory all that much more sweeter for Brownsburg. With the win, the Bulldogs move on to regional play.
“It was a good overall win for our seniors,” Brownsburg coach Phyllis Miller said. “The seniors stepped up and our freshman came through for us, making it a total team effort.”
Brownsburg’s team of Kellie Dipple (91), Rachel Fiscus (96), Courtney Wesson (96), Julia Behrend (93), and Maddie Cody (90) carded a 370.
Cascade’s Jessica Smyth took medalist honors, carding an 81. Smyth has looked good all season after taking home the individual title at the county tournament and seems to be peaking at the right time.
Smyth has never advanced past the regional round of state tournament competition and feels in her last season as a Cadet, she should advance to the finals.
“As it is my senior year there is a little bit of pressure,” Smyth said. “I just have to stay focused and stay on my game. I just need to make sure I play like it is just another 18-hole tournament.”
Avon’s squad of Annie Rodgers (95), Rachel Thompson (89), Amber Steele (105), Leah Thompson (94), and Alex Price (93) combined for a 371 and also advanced on to regional action.
“On the front nine we struggled a bit, but on the back nine they all came back,” first-year coach Amy Nickol said. “I think our nerves got to us.”
Plainfield’s Michelle Goda led the Quakers coming in with an 85. Goda (85), Nicki Gilbert (101), Liz Cozart (100), Payton Duke (97), and Paige Miller (100) finished third with a 382 and move to the regional round.
“We are going to go to work and try to fix just one thing this week for each girl this week,” Plainfield coach Jon Utterback said. “We will come up with an individual plan for everyone next week and stick to the plan. We just want them to come out and play to their potential next week.”
Cascade finished in sixth with a combined score of 444 from Smyth (81), Sage Archer (115), Shelby Baldwin (124), and Maureen Flanigan (124).
Danville, last season’s sectional runner-up, finished seventh. Like Cascade, the Warriors played short handed with only four golfers. Lauryn Luckey (95), Karen Gramajo (107), Makynzie Harding (111), and Kelli Snodgrass (132) carded a 445, narrowly missing out on sixth by a stroke.
Tri-West finished eighth and the squad of Kelsey Russell (104), Alyssa Morgan (129), Ashley Unger (126), Maddie Ross (121), and Maggie Burgess (129) combined for a 480.
Regional action begins at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 at Smock Golf Club. All three advancing teams and Smyth will play practice rounds out there this week to prepare for a competitive regional.
