MARTINSVILLE — The Avon boys’ basketball team knew traveling to Martinsville Tuesday night would be difficult with the current circumstances. Martinsville’s varsity head coach of 25 years, Tim Wolf, was arrested a week ago for public indecency.
Upon his arrest, Martinsville-graduate and NBA Boston Celtics star from the 80s, Jerry Sichting, returned home to coach the rest of the season. With free admission for one night to help bring back Artesian pride, the John R. Wooden gymnasium was packed wall-to-wall with Martinsville fans.
Combined with the environment and energy of Martinsville (17-2), Avon (13-6) was defeated 65-46.
“It was a tough environment and they played with more energy than we did,” Avon coach Jason Young said. “We knew coming down here that it would be a tough environment, but we’re just disappointed in how we played.”
Avon made 23-of-57 from the field and 6-of-11 from the line. Martinsville brought down 21 defensive rebounds to Avon’s 12.
“We didn’t play well,” Young said. “I thought Martinsville played well tonight. They had a lot of energy and shot the ball well. They rebounded well. We just didn’t come up with the 50-50 balls that we needed to come up with tonight.”
Martinsville had a fast start in the first few minutes of the game, taking a 13-7 lead. Orioles senior Lance Magee hit a bucket and senior Austin Burgett sank a three, making it a one-point game, but at the end of the first, Martinsville led 15-14.
The Artesians hit two outside shots to start the second before Burgett hit another trey, pulling Avon to 23-19. After a quick basket from Martinsville senior C.J. Cazee, Burgett silenced the large crowd with a dunk off an offensive rebound.
Going to the locker room, Avon was down by six. Magee hit two layups in a row and Avon trailed by one at 35-34. The Orioles had trouble hitting shots in the last couple minutes of the third, giving Martinsville an eight point lead at the end of the quarter.
Avon’s poor shooting, 3-of-13 from the field, did not help its cause and Martinsville took advantage.
The score was 45-38 before Martinsville went on a 9-0 run in the fourth. Magee hit one of two shots and the Artesians scored four, pushing out ahead 58-39. Junior Aaron Bode hit the first bucket in five minutes for Avon to stop Martinsville’s momentum.
Avon junior Jordan Rhoades hit a shot outside the perimeter and sophomore Connor Funkhouser dropped in a layup in the last minute of the game.
Magee led the Orioles with 13 points and two steals. Burgett added 10 points and four blocks. Rhoades and Bode each collected six points.
With a 16-4 record, Avon plays Southport at Southport in the first round of sectional play at 7 p.m.
“We’re going to have to be better next week,” Young said. “It’s a road in the sectional which isn’t easy. If we’re not better on both ends of the floor, our season will be over.”
