But after the win, the Warriors’ thoughts were with a fallen teammate.

Standout point guard Micah Pollard scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Covenant (2-0), but left the game midway through overtime with a knee injury.

“It was really easy to get distracted,” Covenant coach Matt Williams said. “God forbid we lose her, I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’m very proud of the way our girls fought through and won.”

Cascade (0-2) trailed by as many as six in the second half, and forced overtime when freshman Brandyce Sallee nailed a jumper at the final buzzer.

The Cadets had one last possession trailing by two with three seconds left in overtime, but Alyssa Suter was unable to get off a shot. Cascade committed six turnovers in the extra period.

“We played about as well as we can,” Cascade coach Don Helmick said. “We shot well when we needed to and we were there. But they’re a top 20 team in the state, and a good measuring stick for us early in the season to see where we’re at.”

Alex Morgan filled thte stat sheet for the Cadets, totaling 26 points and nine rebounds.

“She played excellent offensively,” Helmick said. “There’s not too many people that will be able to completely shut her down.”

Cascade took a 9-7 lead after the first quarter, but fell behind 23-20 at halftime.

Neither team took control of the game in the third quarter. The Cadets went up 53-51 with 47.4 seconds left in regulation, when Brittany Sallee found Morgan under the basket for a lay-up. Morgan hit another big shot in overtime to tie the game at 61, but fouled LaNayah Pollard with 3.2 seconds left to set up the game-winning free throws.

Cascade looks to rebound at 6 p.m. tonight at Eminence

“Hopefully we can build on tonight,” Helmick said. “We’ve got to go through some growing pains, but I think we’ll be all right.”

Covenant returns home at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to take on Indianapolis Northwest.
