Cadets sweep Warriors

DANVILLE — In a pair of close matches, the Cascade boys’ and girls’ swim teams each defeated their Danville counterparts Thursday night.

The boys’ team won 82-79 while the girls won 94-86, as both came down to the final relay heats of the night.

“Danville is always great competition and they have great swimmers,” Cascade coach Paul Williams said. “They’re like us, they just don’t have the numbers. This was a good meet all around. It was the last relay on boys and girls. I think they really got hurt by their numbers and got some bad breaks during the night, but our kids swam their hearts out. We’ve done some really good work so far.”

The meet got off to a nice start for the Warriors, sweeping the 200 medley relay. The team of Renae Schuldt, Isabelle Mitchell, Anna Eschbach, and Kendall Startzman won the girls’ event, while Austin Stewart, Grant Callahan, Tanner Austin, and Matt Neilson took the boys’ event.

Cascade, however, took several individual events, enabling them to defeat the host Warriors.

Individual winners for the Cadets were Tori Breeding (200 freestyle and 500 freesytle), Hayley Rosales (200 IM), Regina Solik (50 freestyle, 100 breaststroke), Kate Breedlove (diving), Kyle Trent (diving), Alex Van Winkle (100 butterfly), and Cole Dugan (100 breaststroke).

Cascade also rebounded by taking three of the four remaining relays. Breeding, Solik, Chasity Keegan, and Kristi DeWeese won the girls’ 200 freestyle relay. Alex Cecil, Van Winkle, Griffin Crum, and Jesse Gilmore won the boys’ 200 freestyle relay. Breeding, Solik, Rosales, and Alexis Brown took the 400 freestyle relay.

Grant Callahan, Zack Saito, Devon Berg, and Tanner won the 400 freestyle relay for Danville.

Individual winners for the Warriors were Neilson (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle), Berg (200 IM), Callahan (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Eschbach (100 butterfly), and Mitchell (100 freestyle).

“I was very pleased (with the effort),” Danville coach Leah Miller said. “I’ve been swimming them really hard lately. The times were good tonight. There were a couple of best times and some other times that were close to records. I have nothing to complain about, win or lose.”

The victory for the Cadets was an emotional one.

“We have two girls on our team, Jade and Jaira Gibson, they just found out that their mom has cancer,” Williams said. “This meet was for her tonight. Our kids really have something to fight for. This was an emotional meet. She has her battles and we are going to battle right along with her.”
