INDIANAPOLIS — After surviving a top four cut at sectional, Plainfield diver’s Evan Becker and Aaron Lux took on a field of 20 divers during regional action at Brownsburg last night. Becker, a senior, placed fourth and moves on to the state finals this Friday, competing against Indiana’s top 32 divers.
After making it into regional last season and not advancing, Becker was very excited with his performance.
“I’m so excited because last season I dove horribly and was crushed,” Becker said. “My whole goal was to make it to state and beat my past teammate’s 26th place. I pushed myself that much harder this season so I would make it past regionals and into state.”
This is the culmination of six year’s work for the Plainfield senior who admitted it was all worth it.
“All the hard work, all of the smacks, all of the yelling, all of the tears, all of the blood is definitely paying off,” Becker said.
For Lux, the night finished with a disappointing 18th place, but the freshman took it in stride and realizes how tough the competition is and what he needs to work on next season.
“I need to work on things in practice because there is a lot of strong competition in regionals,” Lux, who has dove for three years, said. “I just need to listen to my coach and keep a positive attitude at all times.”
Plainfield diving coach Kayla Purkiser was thrilled with how her two divers performed.
“For a freshman to make it into regionals is a big deal because our state is so loaded with divers and swimmers,” she said. “Evan just let his nerves get the best of him last year and I told him to go dive and have fun and that’s what he did. That allowed him to stay consistent.”
Becker will practice Friday at the IU Natatorium while his teammates swim in the state preliminaries. The state diving competition begins at 9 a.m. for the preliminaries with the finals commencing at 1p.m. Saturday.
