LIZTON — Both Danville and Tri-West entered Friday’s game hoping to end their regular seasons on a high note.
But it was the Bruins that enter sectional play with momentum on their side.
Tri-West running back Cody Coll ran for three touchdowns and Danville committed five turnovers as the Bruins defeated the Warriors 34-21 Friday night.
“They are a good football team and they keep getting better,” Tri-West coach Chris Coll said. “The fact that we forced a good team to turn the ball over that often is huge for us. It kept them from getting any momentum and off the scoreboard in the second half.”
The miscues started early for Danville.
The Warriors were moving well on their opening drive, but a fumbled snap turned the ball over to the Bruins. Danville would also fumble the ball after a completed pass that led to Tri-West’s first points of the game at the end of the first quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by junior Cody Coll.
Down by a touchdown at halftime, the Bruins marched on a long drive that ended with a Jake Hendershot 8-yard touchdown run and after a botched snap by the Warriors that forced a punt, Coll exploded down the sideline for an 80-yard touchdown run to give Tri-West a 27-21 lead at the end of the third quarter.
After the Warriors failed on fourth down in the fourth quarter, Tri-West would add a 1-yard touchdown run by Austin Moxley to finish out the scoring.
“I had some good blocking up front and on the edge,” Coll said. “I just ran the ball really hard tonight. If we stay focused from here on out,we’ll be all right.”
Danville coach Russ Sumner knew with all the turnovers his team had a big hill to climb to win the game.
“We made poor decisions and we had some personal issues early on,” Sumner said. “We just didn’t protect the ball very well and our concentration wasn’t there. For sectionals we just have to clean up our mistakes. We didn’t have as many penalties, but we haven’t had a turnover in three weeks and we made up for that tonight.”
The Warriors bounced back quickly on their next drive, riding senior running back Nick Thurston all the way to the end zone. Thurston ran for
23 yards and then busted loose, untouched for a 35-yard touchdown to get Danville on the board.
Pass interference calls would help give the Warriors the lead before halftime. The first penalty would lead to a 5-yard touchdown by Thurston and the second call would lead to a 28-yard touchdown catch by senior Noah Pickerel and a 21-7 Danville lead.
The Bruins closed the gap to seven late in the half on a 1-yard touchdown run by Coll and after an interception by Austin Lazaro, theyalmost cut Danville’s lead to three.
However, Thomas TIntera’s 33-yard field goal was blocked and it was 21-14 Danville at the half.
With a nice come from behind victory in the books, Tri-West heads into sectional play on a high note next week.
“We are just going to enjoy this tonight and get ready for next week tomorrow,” Coll said. “We just need to keep doing what we’ve been doing and execute our game plan and we’ll be ready.”
