When the U.S. Senate resumes work in January, most Americans know it will debate major issues related to health care reform and cap-and-trade energy policy.
But there is another bill pending in the U.S. Senate that could have a detrimental impact on our national energy policy. “The American Clean Energy and Security Act” has passed the House already and would mandate that certain amounts of our electricity come from sources deemed renewable.
The key word is “mandate,” and the legislation intends to enforce a one-size-fits-all solution on each and every state. What does this mean for Indiana? Today, we enjoy relatively cheap electricity in Indiana because it is primarily produced using coal. By mandating certain levels of wind and solar power — renewable, but much more expensive, energy sources — Hoosier electric bills will go up drastically.
The upshot of this legislation is that it would force a California-style energy formula on Indiana. What works there won’t work here, and Hoosiers can’t afford this terrible idea.
Call Sen. Evan Bayh and tell him to oppose Renewable Energy Standards in energy legislation being considered by the U.S. Senate. These standards will only cause your electric bill to go up!
