Public schools deserve credit

To the Editor:

During every election cycle, a debate is always re-kindled if the public schools are worth anything. Charter schools or the vouchers essentially surface among the top choices. However, great public schools operating in our community do not get enough credit for their hard work and perseverance, and they are marginalized with rest of the public schools in Indiana.

When we moved to Indiana last year from another state, we did have a choice to send our daughter to a private school or Sycamore Elementary School. A lot of middle class families however, are not so lucky to afford the luxury of sending a child to a private school. A family moving from out-of-the-state is always in a dilemma of choosing the right school district.

After doing some research on local public schools, we narrowed down our home search to Avon community. We are very happy with our choice of attending Sycamore Elementary for our daughter. We do feel that the quality of education and attention provided by the Sycamore Elementary teachers is as good as any private school. Credit goes to the teachers and the principal, Mr. Springer.

Sycamore Elementary has designed a curriculum that matches the individual skills of a child. Every child gets an appropriate level of attention. As a result, the school outperforms the norm average in the standardized NWEA/ISTEP testing.

In conclusion, Sycamore Elementary school teachers have chosen such a noble cause to educate our children. It is our collective duty to provide our full support to public school teachers and principals to fulfill the dreams of our children for a better Avon community.
