Graduation shun was dishonorable

To the Editor:

This is concerning the U.S. Marine’s family who felt shunned at Plainfield’s High School graduation.

I am shocked that the administrators of Plainfield High School find the U.S. Military offensive.

Oh, I am sure they would deny my accusation, but their actions toward this Marine speak louder than their excuses.

If one student was allowed to dress in something representing their birth STATE ... then surely one should be allowed to dress in something representing one’s birth COUNTRY.

It’s just plain sick how some Americans are so darn scared of offending a few opinions that without realizing it they end up interfering with a lot of others’ freedom ... the very freedom this young marine is willing to risk his life for if called upon to do so.

Plainfield’s High School graduation may not have been a military event but it was not a celebration of Hawaii either.

My father was a U.S. Marine and I was always so proud to see him all dressed up in his uniform. Years ago when he married my mother, their wedding was not a military event but he wore that impressive blue uniform anyway.

Cody Lathan, you are not my son, but I am proud of you and your parents just the same. My son served four years in the military (U.S. Army) and I can still remember how proud his father and I were seeing him in his dress uniform. It’s hard to imagine someone finding that offensive.

Thank you for being willing to protect the freedoms in the United States of America. God Bless you and protect you and your family.

  • Age is simply a matter of mind

I was sitting in a restaurant the other day — I won’t say which one, but I will say it was one of those where you get pancakes as a side dish to anything you order, including salads — when I flipped casually to the menu page for, shall we say, mature guests.

President Barack Obama has an unsettling defense of his health-care reform - it's merely a version of the plan implemented by Massachusetts.
