— Earl D. Jero of West Lafayette died unexpectedly Oct. 12 in the emergency room at St. Elizabeth Central Hospital. He was 79 and had formerly resided in Brownsburg.
Born Oct. 5, 1933, in Beloit, Wis., he was a son of the late Clifford T. and Esther May Peterson Jero. He married Ramona E. Martin on Dec. 16, 1961, in Beloit, and they moved to Lafayette in 1972. She died July 23, 1994.
He married Kay Cool Anderson on May 21, 2000, in Las Vegas, Nev., and she survives.
Mr. Jero graduated from Beloit Memorial High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Army 5th Armored Division from 1954 to '56. From 1997 to July of 2012, Mr. Jero resided in Brownsburg, Indiana.
He worked 24 years in the tool crib at Fairfield Manufacturing before retiring in 2004. After retirement, he worked as a greeter at Sam's Club in Lafayette and the Meijer Store in Avon. He also worked several years at the Speedway Convenience Store in Brownsburg.
Mr. Jero is a former member of Battle Ground United Methodist Church and Grace United Methodist Church. He was a life member of the Fairfield Athletic Club and a former member of men's bowling leagues in Beloit, Lafayette, and Brownsburg. He enjoyed baking, especially pies; flower and vegetable gardening; and was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, Indiana University, and the Chicago Cubs.
Additional survivors include a son, Karl W. Jero and wife Suzie of Lafayette; step-children Sharlyn Metcalf of Deer Lodge, Mt., Dr. Robert Anderson and wife Manette of Glenwood Springs, Colo., and Nancy Hamilton and husband Jeff of Crawfordsville; grandsons Taylor N. and Kendall T. Jero; eight step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lloyd E. Jero and wife Shirley of South Beloit, Ill.
Preceding him in death were four brothers and six sisters.
Services were Wednesday at Hippensteel Funeral Home, 822 N. 9th St., Lafayette, with the Rev. Larry Johnson officiating. Interment with military honors was at Tippecanoe Memorial Gardens.
