Martin "Marty" Wendell Mote

Martin “Marty” Wendell Mote died Aug. 31, 2012.

Mr. Mote had farmed and then worked more than 35 years as an employee and store manager for Miller-Jones Shoe Co. and as a store manager for Haas Shoe store in Plainfield.

He was a member of the Friends Church in Plainfield, past president of the Quaker Men’s Club, and a board member of the Quaker Men of Western Yearly Meeting. He was also a member of the Plainfield Kiwanis Club, served as president for two terms and as lieutenant governor in the Circle City Division, and was a charter member with perfect attendance. He was a life member of Kiwanis International.

As a young man, Mr. Mote sang in a quartet Sunday mornings on a radio station in Ohio. He was a member of the Four Flats, a men’s quartet from Friends Church, and he and his brothers also sang together.

For the past six years, he and his wife, Iona, had lived with and been taken care of by his stepdaughter, Ruth Ann Powell, her husband Rich, and their family.

Survivors include his wife, Iona Jean (Price/McKibben) Mote of Plainfield; daughter and son-in-law, Donna Jean (Mote) Mack and William R. Mack of Centerville, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Ruth Ann Powell, and son-in-law, Richard Powell of Galveston; several nieces and nephews; stepgrandsons Todd (Lori) Powell, Troy (Emily) Powell, and Tim (Tatia) Powell; and great-grandchildren Natalie, Caleb, Hannah, Jared, Paige, Lauren, Blythe, Griffin, and Addison.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Rollie an Rosa (Kunkleman) Mote; sons Emerson Dean, Dennis Ray, and Dale Eugene; an infant granddaughter, Debbie Jean Mack; a grandson, Gregory William Mack; and brothers Miles Collins Mote and Maurice Lowell Mote.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Hale-Sarver Family Funeral Home, 284 N. Miami St., West Milton. Interment will follow at Mote Cemetery on Arcanum-Laura Road in Darke County, Ohio.

Calling at the funeral home is for an hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
