Judge George B. Hoffman Jr. of Avon

Judge George B. Hoffman Jr. of Avon died Dec. 25 at the age of 85.

Born March 6, 1924, he was a son of the late George B. and Mary (Ditzler) Hoffman Sr. He married Margaret Cross, and she died in 1994. He married Louise (Gibbs) Scudder in 1997, and she survives.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Germany during World War II. He received the Purple Heart for combat action.

Mr. Hoffman graduated from the Valparaiso University School of Law. He served 30 years as a Court of Appeals judge for the State of Indiana. He became a senior judge in 1998 and continued to serve in that capacity until his death.

He was named Legendary Lawyer of the Year in 2009 by the Indiana Bar Foundation. Judge Hoffman was the first judge of the Court of Appeals for the State of Indiana to author 2,000 opinions. He participated in more than 9,000 opinions over the course of his career.

He was a six-time recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash Award.

Mr. Hoffman was a member of Bartlett Chapel United Methodist Church in Avon.

Additional survivors include sons Dean of Salt Lake City, Utah, Dale of Angola, Karl of Lafayette, Kent of Westfield, and Kurt Hoffman of Fishers; stepchildren Vicki Nees of West Lafayette, Marta Himsel of Avon, and Craig Scudder of Columbia, S.C.; 10 grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Katherine Watkins of Hebron.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Bartlett Chapel United Methodist Church, 4396 E. Main St., Avon. Private graveside services will be at Crownland Cemetery in Noblesville.

Memorials may be made to Bartlett Chapel United Methodist Church.

Weaver & Randolph Funeral Home in Danville is handling arrangements.
