James Tony Madden of Plainfield

James Tony Madden of Plainfield died Wednesday. He was 81.

Born March 1, 1928, in Loveland, Ohio, he was a son of the late Roy and Dovie (Morris) Madden.

Mr. Madden was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University and earned a master’s degree from Butler University in Indianapolis.

He began his teaching career in a two-room schoolhouse in Kentucky. He then taught six years in Wayne Township Schools and served as principal at Northwood Elementary School in Mooresville from 1960-70. He then worked 20 years as principal of Brentwood Elementary School in Plainfield before retiring in 1989.

Mr. Madden was a 50-year member of Plainfield Masonic Lodge No. 653, and belonged to the Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine. He was a past member of the Plainfield Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and a Sunday School teacher. He later became a member of Plainfield Christian Church.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Angela Madden; a daughter, Linda Rasner; sisters Frances Shepherd and Joyce Wright; and grandchildren Leah Rasner, Alison Madden, and Laura Madden.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Helen (Smith) Madden.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Plainfield Christian Church. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Plainfield.

Calling at the church is from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Memorials may be made to Wheeler Mission.

Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home in Plainfield is handling arrangements.
