Dean Franklin Turner of Plainfield

Dean Franklin Turner of Plainfield died Sunday after a brief illness. He was 81.

Born Oct. 19, 1928, in Vermillion County, he was a son of the late Dana and Audrey (Boswell) Turner. He married Carolyn Gabel on June 25, 1950, and she survives.

Mr. Turner graduated from Tangier High School in 1947. He and his wife were lifetime farmers in Hendricks County. He was very involved with the 4-H program at the local and state levels and was director of the Hendricks County Fair Board for 36 years. He was also a past director of the Indiana State Fair Board and State Fair Commission and was actively involved with the Indiana Association of County and District Fairs and was also elected into its Hall of Fame in 1990.

He was a past member of the Avon School Board, having served 10 years and was currently the president of the Holding Corporation for Avon Schools. He served on the Hendricks County Planning Commission, the Hendricks County Extension Board, was past president of the Hendricks County Holding Corporation for the 4-H Fairgrounds, and was serving on the County Board of Health and as president of the Sheriff’s Merit Board at the time of his death.

In 1974, Mr. Turner was the first Democrat in many years elected as a Hendricks County councilman. He was also a member of the Plainfield Rotary Club, and Plainfield Friends Church where he had served in various leadership roles.

Additional survivors include daughters and a son-in-law, Cindy and Roy Simmons of Plainfield, and LuAnne Turner of Newburgh; a son and daughter-in-law, Dean Jr. “Rocky” and Cindy Turner of Plainfield; grandchildren Adriane Turner, Ryan Simmons, and Gabel Turner; sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Danny Ballard of Clayton, Thelma and George Roth of Lebanon, Helen Thomas of Danville, and Bonnie and Mike O’Neill of Indianapolis; brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Barbara Turner of Austin, Texas, and Russell and Ginny Turner of Centerville; and many nieces and nephews.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Plainfield Friends Church. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Calling is from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home in Plainfield.

Memorials may be made to the Hendricks County Community Foundation, the Plainfield Friends Church, or the Hendricks County 4-H program.
