James Dennis "Denny" Duke of Avon died Feb. 1 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. He was 74.

Born Oct. 24, 1938, in Indianapolis, he was a son of the late Harlan Albert and Evelyn Deloris (Shroyer) Duke. He married Dixie Avonelle (Miller) Duke on Nov. 11, 1961. She died Feb. 19, 1994. He married Linda Marie (Endres) Duke on Feb. 10, 2002, and she survives.

Mr. Duke was reared and educated in Indianapolis and attended Ben Davis High School. In 1962, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy with the Seabees before his honorable discharge in '64.

In 1957, he apprenticed and became a member of Carpenters Local 60. He was the owner of JUD Construction in Avon from 1977 to '97.

He enjoyed fishing, carpentry, old movies, talking politics, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Pike Township Lions Club.

Additional survivors include sons Jimmy Duke and wife Teresa of Danville, Jon Duke and wife Andrea of Danville, and Jered Duke and wife Laura of Greenwood; grandchildren Brandon Duke, Jeremy Duke and wife Holly, Jacob Duke, Olivia Duke, Christopher Duke, Cameron Duke, and Connor Duke; a great-grandson, Jackson Duke; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were a granddaughter, Natalie; a sister, Carol; and brothers Kent, Richard, and Charles.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Myers Chapel of Memories, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon, with the Rev. Steve Reeves officiating. Interment with military rites will follow at Floral Park Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and for an hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
