Mary Louise Kelch Vandivier

 

Mary Louise Kelch Vandivier died Wednesday. She was 102.

Born June 4, 1910, in Trafalgar, she was the only child of the late James W. and Ona (Bridges) Kelch. She married Robert McCauley “Cauley” Vandivier in 1933, and he died in 1991.

She graduated from Trafalgar High School and then attended Franklin College where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi. She graduated from Indiana University in 1932 with a degree in sociology and economics.

Mrs. Vandivier and her husband moved to Indianapolis, where he attended medical school, and then settled there after his graduation. While living in Indianapolis, she was active at Fairview Presbyterian Church, and was a Cub Scout leader, a Girl Scout leader, a member and president of the Alumnae Club of Pi Beta Phi, and a collegiate advisor at Butler University. She also belonged to Tuesday Study Club, American Association of University Women, the Indianapolis Women’s Chorale, and her Thursday bridge club.

Following her husband’s retirement, the couple moved back to Johnson County for several years. While there, Mrs. Vandivier went back to the church of her childhood, the Trafalgar Christian Church, where she served as choir director.

She was a member of the Franklin Alumnae Club and served as a collegiate advisor at Franklin College.

In 1988, the couple moved to Danville to be near their daughter. Mrs. Vandivier joined the Danville Presbyterian Church, singing in the choir and serving as a church elder. Following the closing of the church, she became a member of the Danville United Methodist Church.

She also was a member of the DAR, the Browning Club, and the Up To Date Club.

Mrs. Vandivier was an accomplished musician as a vocalist, pianist, harpist, and choir director and was known for her book reviews. She lived the past seven years at Ivy Trace in Danville.

Survivors include a son, James M. Vandivier, M.D. and wife Sharon; a daughter, Susan Boles and husband Jeff;  grandchildren Susan Vandivier, Mark Vandivier, Doug Vandivier, J. Douglas Boles and wife Beth, Mary Hendricks and husband Kendall, Sally Steward and husband Matt, and Leah Gibbs; 16 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter; an honorary daughter, Marsha Andry; and her Ivy Trace family.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at the Danville United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the First Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Franklin.

Calling is from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Baker Funeral Home in Danville, and for an hour prior to the service on Monday.
