Carolyn Carter Kellum died Feb. 13 at the Robin Run Healthcare Center in Indianapolis. She was 99.

Born Jan. 28, 1911, in Plainfield, to descendants of Quaker pioneer settlers, she attended public schools in Plainfield and graduated from Olney Friends (Quaker) School in Barnesville, Ohio. She graduated from Earlham College in Richmond in 1932 with a major in mathematics and a minor in English, and then studied library science at the University of Southern California.

Mrs. Kellum taught high school for 24 years in Union City, Mooresville, and Plainfield school districts.

In 1941 she married Clark Kellum, took a 14-year hiatus from teaching, raised her children, was a farm wife, and volunteered with the Parent-Teacher Association, as well as church and civic activities.

She was active in PEO, the Mooresville Nature Club, the Plainfield Women’s Club, the Hendricks County Historical Society, and various other civic groups. She started Meals on Wheels program in Hendricks County. She was also active in her local Friends (Quaker) Meeting and the Friends World Committee (FWCC).

Survivors include a daughter, Evalyn Anne Kellum; a son, Allan Carter Kellum; their spouses, Henriette Kellum and James Taylor “JT”; and grandchildren Scott and Allison Kellum.

A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. April 10 at the Plainfield Friends Meeting, 105 S. East St., Plainfield.

Memorials may be made to the Plainfield Friends Meeting, Hendricks County Meals on Wheels, or to Earlham College.

Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home in Plainfield is handling arrangements.
