Ruth A. New of Poland died Thursday at The Waters of Greencastle. She was 77.

Born Feb. 28, 1935, in Indianapolis, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Mary Duree Neff. She married Willard E. New on July 24, 1953, and he survives.

Mrs. New worked at Everet Smith’s grocery store in North Salem. She then worked as a clerk at the North Salem Post Office and retired after serving as Post Master for 10 years.

She was a member of North Salem Baptist Church. She enjoyed playing horseshoes and cards, working in her garden and flower beds, fishing, hummingbirds, and her dogs Katie and Odie.

Survivors include a daughter, Rosemary (John) Sharp; sons Danny (Patty) New and Mark (Charlotte) New; sisters Doris Purichia, Mary O’Riley, and Shirley Looper; brothers Charles Neff and Bert Neff; 10 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Porter Funeral Home in North Salem with Marc Monte officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in North Salem.

Calling at the funeral home is for two hours prior to the service.
