Charles Thomas Norton Jr. recently died at the age of 88.
Born March 24, 1924, in Dallas, Texas, he was a son of the late Anne LaFon Norton and Charles Norton Sr.
After the Norton family moved to Anderson, “Charlie” spent his childhood enjoying the wonders of Mounds State Park where his mother served as the first-ever female park superintendent. The
park continues to hold special memories for all surviving members of the Norton family.
Mr. Norton attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from Anderson High School in 1942.
He attended Anderson College and Ohio State University, where he joined Sigma Chi fraternity. He
interrupted his education to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Lee Jones. They were married for 65 years before her death in July of 2010.
Mr. Norton was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Anderson, co-owner of Recreation Equipment Corporation, a founding member of Edgewood Country Club, a member of Anderson Country Club, a member of the Elks Club, as well as a member of the American Legion.
Active in community affairs throughout his life, he was an avid golfer, world traveler, and bridge player who was fond of spending family and golf getaways in Sarasota, Fla. He had an extensive collection of antique tools and was known as an outdoorsman and an inventor of industrial tools and components.
Survivors include daughter Noel Heymann (Mike) of Indianapolis; daughter Nicki O’Bryan of Louisville, Ky.; son Tom Norton (Cathie) of Fallbrook, Calif.; daughter Nancy Norton of San Carlos-Sonora, Mexico; son Tim Norton (Deidre) of Acworth, Ga.; grandchildren John O’Bryan of Nashville, Tenn., Nick O’Bryan of Louisville, Ky., Emily Norton Henry of Lansing, Mich., Marina Gonzales-Norton of Tucson, Ariz. Matthew Norton, Elizabeth Norton, Mitchell Norton, and Emma Norton, all of Acworth, Ga.; a brother, Martin Norton of La Habra, Calif.; and close cousin Bill Sefton of Grand Rapids, Mich.
He was preceded in death by siblings Joann Bell and John Norton.
Services are 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Anderson.
Calling at the church is for two hours prior to the service.
