AVON — Volunteers were scattered throughout Hendricks County last week, rolling up their sleeves for the 19th annual Day of Caring, sponsored by the United Way of Central Indiana.
One of the beneficiaries of the event was Mental Health America Hendricks County. Volunteers showed up there to make some minor facility upgrades, complete office work, and help prepare for the organization’s annual garage sale.
Sheila Balensiefer, MHAHC volunteer coordinator, said they always plan the garage sale around the Day of Caring.
“We couldn’t do this without their help,” Balensiefer said. “We have them helping with the garage sale and then we have other extra projects they have been helping with too.”
Volunteer Carole Farmer took a day from her work at State Auto to help out.
“Our company gives us a day to do this and it’s our choice,” Farmer said. “I chose to work here because it’s in my community.”
She said she was busy, but that volunteering at MHAHC turned out to be a pleasant experience.
“I’m really having a great time,” Farmer said. “And I think I’ve found some new friends during the fellowship with the ladies.”
Several State Bank of Lizton employees also spent time volunteering.
“We knew we wanted to help out an organization and the community,” Chasity Roos said.
Most of the volunteers have been participating in the Day of Caring for several years.
“The volunteers really do a lot,” Balensiefer said. “We try to do a lot of projects while they’re here.”
The Day of Caring is the United Way of Central Indiana’s signature event. The event gives the United Way a chance to join forces with other volunteer groups.
The organization holds the event each year so volunteers can learn more about United Way and how it partners with the community.
