A morning crash claimed the life of a semi driver around 7:30 a.m. Feb. on I-70 eastbound at mile marker 57 -- about one mile west ofState Road 39.
The driver, who’s name is being withheld until his family is notified, was dealing with a disabled tractor at the time of the crash. When the incident occurred, the semi was being prepared to be towed by Curtis Wrecker Service.
According to investigators, traffic was slowed around the incident. However, a 2003 Green Freightliner pulling two trailers, driven by Richard C. Maples, 60, Wilmington, Ohio, was allegedly “going faster than the other vehicles near the scene,”according to Indiana State Police officials.
The driver of the disabled semi and the wrecker driver, Joshua D. Sims, 30, of Cloverdale, were standing between the vehicles when Maples’second trailer jackknifed. The trailer hit the semi from the rear and pushed it into the wrecker. Though Sims was able to jump out of the way, the driver was unable and he was pinned in between.
The Hendricks County Coroner pronounced the driver dead at the scene. Sims suffered lower body injuries. Maples also suffered injuries that were unknown by ISP as of press time. He was taken to Wishard Hospital.
I-70 was closed for a significant portion of the day. Traffic was diverted from eastbound I-70 to U.S. 231 North to U.S. 40 due to “wood resurfacing material on the road, with other various non-hazardous cargo,”according to ISP.
