Convicted murderer mistakenly released

Authorities with the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) announced the mistaken release of an offender from authorities in Chicago, Ill.

Steven L. Robbins, 44, was released Jan. 29 from the Indiana State Prison on a court order to the Cook County Circuit Court where he was facing charge of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. The charges against Robbins there were dropped and Illinois authorities mistakenly released him instead of returning him to IDOC’s custody.

A warrant for his arrest has been issued in both Indiana and Illinois.

Robbins was born in Gary and is serving a 60-year sentence for murder and carrying a handgun without a license out of Marion County. He arrived at the Indiana State Prison on Oct. 25, 2004, and his earliest projected release date was June 29, 2029.

Robbins is described as a black male, about 5’5” tall, weighing about 190 pounds. He has a tattoo on the right side of his neck that says “Nicole.”

Local and state law enforcement in both Illinois and Indiana are conducting an investigation to locate and apprehend Robbins. Anyone who sees him is warned not to approach him, but rather to contact the nearest law enforcement agency, or dial 911. Anyone with information regarding Robbins’ whereabouts may also call Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS (8477).
