Community invited to use BDHS fitness center

INDIANAPOLIS — With the turning of another year comes resolutions where many people look to improve themselves — and getting fit almost always tops the list of annual vows made.

In Wayne Township, residents are able to keep those resolutions by working out at The Fitness Center at Ben Davis High School.

Bruce Carter is the coordinator of staff and student wellness at BDHS. He helps to staff and maintain the center.

“It’s a great facility for the price,” he said. “It’s been a huge benefit for the staff and students. We try to make sure the public knows that they can use it.”

The facility opened to the public following a renovation in 2005. The Fitness Center of Ben Davis High School opened in January 2006. It includes an indoor walk/jog course, a cardio room, and a pool.

The indoor walk/jog course is a 170-meter track in the multi-purpose area. The course is open from 5 to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday.

The cardio room is inside the multi-purpose area and is outfitted with treadmills, elliptical trainers, stair machines, stationary bikes, rowing machines, and strength training equipment. Hours for the cardio room are 5 to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday and 3:15 to 6:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The pool is open for swimming for adults and children. Lap lanes are available. Children ages 15 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Open swim hours are 6:10 to 8:15 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

“The pool is a fantastic resource and has grown in popularity,” Carter said. “We get many different groups coming in and we try to accommodate them as much as we can.”

The Fitness Center at Ben Davis High School is free to employees of the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township and BDHS students.

The fee for employee family members is $3 a session, $10 a month, or $30 a semester.

Wayne Township residents may use the facility for $3 a session, $15 a month, or $40 a semester.

Open swim is free to all district employees and BDHS students. Employee family members or residents of Wayne Township can attend open swim for $3 a session or purchase a punch card for $15 for eight sessions or $25 for 16 sessions. One punch will be given for an individual attending a session or two punches for a family.

“We are getting more calls this time of year from our staff and community,” Carter said. “I think even the students get the bug to come in more this time of year.”

He said the hours for the fitness center are not ideal for everyone.

“But if your schedule fits with our hours, it really is a good deal,” he said. “Sometimes we have people come in and get started exercising. Then they will move on to another facility that might have more hours.”
