AVON — A man was killed in Washington Township Park while riding mountain bikes on a trail with his son Sunday.
The victim, Larry Smrz, 57, was riding with his 30-year-old son when he was involved in an accident around 3 p.m. on the expert bike trails.
According to Avon police officials, the son said that he and his father were riding along the trail and his father attempted to negotiate a man-made bridge obstacle, which crosses a dry creek bed along the trail. He said that his father crested at the top of the obstacle and fell from the same landing atop his head.
Immediately after the accident, Smrz’s son dialed 911 and began to administer CPR.
The son said that Smrz was an amateur mountain bike rider, but had been riding street-style bikes for some time. He also said that they were riding alone and that Smrz had not consumed alcohol, drugs, or any type of medication prior to the ride.
Smrz was pronounced dead at the scene.
