— To promote an alternative commute to driving alone during Rideshare Month, Commuter Connect is launching the 2012 Commuter Challenge.
During the month of October, people can log commute trips (to get to and from work) they take via carpooling, vanpooling, riding the bus, biking, or walking. Each trip logged will earn one entry for that individual.
A random drawing will take place every week, and four winners will be awarded prizes, which include IndyGo 30-day passes, Indy Express Bus monthly passes, and gas cards. A grand prize winner will be chosen from entries throughout the month. The grand prize winner will receive a $500 gift card. In addition to the grand prize, there will be additional runner-up prizes drawn at the end of the month.
"If we can get people to try an alternative to driving alone, they'll see that it can save money, reduce stress, recapture some time, and even burn calories," Andrew McGee, Commuter Connect manager, said in a press release. "Ridesharing is still catching on in Central Indiana, and we think this is a fun way to instill a little competition and encourage people to give it a try."
To participate in the challenge, visit the website at CommuterConnect.us and create a free account or log into an existing account. For those looking for carpool and vanpool partners or a biking buddy, click "Sign Up" on the home page of the website. By signing up, there is no commitment to carpool, vanpool, or bike to work; Commuter Connect only provides potential matches to help commuters get started with one of the options, if they choose to do so.
Commuter Connect is the rideshare service of Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority (CIRTA). It is part of a federally-funded service designed to reduce air pollution and traffic congestion.
There is no charge for employers or employees to use Commuter Connect's services.
As of Aug. 31, Commuter Connect reported that 423 Central Indiana companies that participate in Commuter Connect provide incentives and/or resources to help employees with alternative transportation; 5,748 residents are registered in the Commuter Connect database; 2,744 residents are registered and waiting to find others to share rides with to and from work; 3,040 Central Indiana people who have registered participate in a vanpool or carpool, ride bikes, walk, or take a bus to work; and 18 vanpools take 212 commuters to and from work.
