AVON — Though the decision for Harmony Baptist Church to add on to its building had already been made, they couldn’t begin to envision the assistance they were about to receive.
The help came from Church Building Ministries Inc., a group from Brookhaven, Miss., that travels around the country aiding in the building of churches.
“They helped make things that were impossible, possible,” said Jonathan Lilly, pastor at Harmony. “They have been a huge help.”
The group, consists of 15 men and seven women and they came to Avon to help Harmony Baptist Church move closer to completing their Family Life Center.
Traveling by motor coach, the crew has been making these building trips for 15 years.
Church Building Ministries learned about the project at Harmony while they were in the area previously. In exchange for the assistance, the group asked for just one thing in return.
“When they are looking to come back, I will tell them about other church projects in the area that need help,” Lilly said. “We can send volunteers to join in the work.”
Church Building Ministries varies in age, with some members as old as 80. They traveled 15 hours to get to Avon Dec. 5 and left Dec. 11.
The group, along with volunteers from Harmony, have nearly completed the framing on the 17,000 square-foot project which is set to open in the spring.
“We would like to begin on Easter,” Lilly said. “But with the weather, we don’t think that we will be able to do that because there is a lot of outside work. We are anticipate opening in the late spring.”
Lilly thinks that this shows the church’s commitment to give to the community that has given to them.
“We have a lot of desire to expand,” he said. “We are growing and need more room. We want to better serve and reach the community.”
The addition will be on the existing building on Broyles Road by the Washington Township Park. The new addition will include some education classrooms and a giant multi-purpose room that will serve a dual purpose as a new sanctuary.
The church is at 5697 Broyles Road in Avon.
