INDIANAPOLIS — In January Bright House Networks will bring the C-SPAN Civics Bus here to visit two schools, part of a national tour bringing the world of public affairs to life.
From 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 5, the C-SPAN Civics Bus will be at Irvington Preparatory Academy, 6040 E. Pleasant Run Parkway South Drive. From 1-3 p.m., the bus will be at Herron High School of the Arts, 110 E. 16th St.
Each stop will provide students, teachers, and the general public an opportunity to tour the C-SPAN Civics Bus and learn about C-SPAN’s unique public affairs programming. Visitors will also have the opportunity to engage in discussion about government and media and learn about C-SPAN’s free civics resources.
At both schools, students will also learn more about C-SPAN’s 2010 StudentCam documentary film competition. Bright House Networks has again partnered with C-SPAN to encourage central Indiana students to explore national issues that are most on their minds by entering the StudentCam competition.
Bright House Networks invites all middle school students in grades 6-8 and high school students in grades 9-12 to produce a five- to eight-minute video documentary and submit their work to the competition. Students are asked to produce their original documentary on either one of the nation’s greatest strengths or a specific challenge the country is facing.
C-SPAN will award a total of $50,000 in cash prizes this year, including 75 student awards and 11 teacher awards. The grand prize winner with the best overall entry will be awarded $5,000, with multiple cash prize awards of $3,000, $1,500, $750, $500, and $250, respectively, to students in both middle and high school categories. The deadline to enter the 2010 competition is Jan. 20. For more information, visit the website www.studentcam.org.
