For the fourth year in a row, the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) conducted an auto show and competition for the three facilities with auto body vocational programs.
A few months back, the IDOC declared six vehicles unfit for the parole division fleet and was in the process of authorizing these vehicles to be given back to the state as surplus property. Nevertheless, the vehicles were divided between Pendleton Correctional Facility, Plainfield Correctional Facility, and Westville Correctional, all facilities with auto body vocational programs, and offenders reconditioned the vehicles.
On Nov. 20, IDOC Commissioner Edwin G. Buss and Governor Mitch Daniels’ Chief of Staff Earl Goode judged this year’s auto show, which was conducted between the Indiana Government Center North and South buildings. The winner was a green mini-van reconditioned in the Plainfield Correctional Facility auto body program.
“In years past, the auto show was more about the artistic abilities of the offenders in the auto body programs,” Buss said. “This year, the offenders worked on vehicles for our Parole Division, and now we have six wonderfully reconditioned vehicles for our fleet. I am very proud of the hard work put into these cars and enjoy seeing the results of the vocational program.”
Now that the vehicles have been reconditioned and repaired, they will be returned to the Parole Division for use.
