BROWNSBURG — The odor of gasoline lead to the discovery of a petroleum spill Wednesday morning in White Lick Creek on the west side of town here.
Craig Peoples of the Wayne Township Hazardous Materials Response Team served as the public information officer on the scene.
“We got a call about 8:30 this morning reporting the smell of gasoline,” Peoples said.
Employees at the Brownsburg Wastewater Treatment Plant were the first to smell the petroleum, he said.
The hazmat team is comprised of responders from Avon and Wayne Township in Marion County.
Those first on the scene found a spill coming into the plant from White Lick Creek, People said.
“We are now trying to isolate the source of the spill now,” he said. “It’s not a large amount of fuel. There have been no evacuations and no one has been hurt.”
Members of the hazmat team were using equipment to contain the spill and soak up the petroleum. By mid-morning, the team had turned the spill over to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the Town of Brownsburg to investigate.
