SPEEDWAY — Police here arrested two men after a car chase that resulted in a crash.
Jose Cazares and Alejandro Campos, both 18, were arrested after a chase that resulted in them crashing their vehicle and running on foot.
Speedway Police Officer Ben Rupenthal was patrolling the 5800 block of West 25th Street, when he observed a black Honda Accord traveling at a high rate of speed. Rupenthal activated his emergency lights and siren, but said Cazares, who was driving, refused to stop.
Police say Cazares then began driving recklessly by continuing to exceed the speed limit and passing other vehicles. Cazares lost control of the vehicle at 2502 Moller Road and struck a residence. Police say, however, that he was able to regain control of the Honda and continue to flee.
At the 5400 block of 25th Street, police say Cazares and Campos abandoned the car and began to flee on foot. Rupenthal apprehended Cazares. Other officers say Campos running through yards before apprehending him in the rear yard at 5427 W. 26th St.
Rupenthal then determined that the Honda had been reported stolen. The owner of the Honda informed police that he reported the car stolen on Oct. 23. Shortly afterwards, the owner was traveling on High School Road and observed the stolen vehicle being driven by the two suspects. The owner began to follow the car and called police, but lost it as the suspects sped away.
Cazares was arrested and charged with auto theft, resisting law enforcement, failure to stop after a property damage accident, reckless driving, and operating a vehicle while never receiving a license. Campos was arrested and charged with resisting law enforcement and criminal trespass.
