BROWNSBURG — Town officials here will set its board and commission appointments, including voting for the town council presidency, at a meeting Jan. 3.
The meeting is set for 6 p.m. at town hall. Current President Dwayne Sawyer said residents should be very interested in the outcome of the meeting.
“These are appointments to boards and commissions that really do a lot of heavy lifting for the town,” he said. “The police commission, parks and recreation board, the redevelopment commission, and the economic development commission ... those guys really have a responsibility to help shape and direct what’s the vision of the town council. The five of us cannot do it all, so they do a critical role in shaping what the town is all about.”
Applications for boards and commissions were taken and interviews conducted over the past month.
The format for the meeting is that the floor is opened for nominations. The council, if there is more than one nomination for the same spot, votes on who will be appointed.
Of all of the groups, Sawyer opined that the RDC possibly faces the most heavy lifting coming into the new year.
“I think from an activity perspective, you’ll see the RDC have a lot,” he said. “They have money in the bank to spend on road projects and other projects.”
As an example, he named the recent 56th Street overlay as part of what the town can expect them to be looking at improving.
“Like every year, the tax increment fund (TIF) pass through is decided,” Sawyer said. “They have to decide if they want to pass it through to other entities or rebuild TIF areas.”
Sawyer said residents should feel good about the direction the town is going.
“We got a lot done in 2012,” he said. “We have new jobs coming to town and new businesses. If 2013 looks anything like 2012, residents should be excited for the prospects of growth and job opportunities, in spite of all the doom and gloom. We do have our struggles and people hurting for jobs here in Brownsburg, but the overall broad stroke is very positive.”
